THROW IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT: Learning to Let Go and Trust God

This week, I felt buried under 20 tons of “troubles.” Not small things—real, difficult challenges I had no answers for. And for some, I still don’t.

What happens when we feel this way? We become moody, irritable, emotional, and often, our loved ones take the brunt of it.

But God reminded me of a verse that encouraged me, and I know it will encourage you too:

Psalm 55:22 (AMP)Cast your burden on the Lord [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail).

The NETBible version says “THROW your burdens upon the Lord.”

Throwing vs. Holding On

To throw means to propel something with force through the air. Have you ever had something thrown at you? It’s intentional. It’s forceful. It’s not a gentle toss.

The Hebrew word for cast or throw is gāraš, meaning: drive out, thrust out, expel, divorce. This isn’t passive—it’s an intentional act of separating from your burdens and placing them on Jesus.

Now, imagine throwing something but not letting go. What happens?

If you try to throw something without releasing it, your arm absorbs the force, straining muscles and joints, causing pain or even injury.

Ummmm, why would you do that?

Because you still want control. You’re afraid to let go. You don’t trust the other person to catch it.

You have trust issues. Control issues. Ownership issues.

But in the end, you only hurt yourself more.

The Key: Release It

This verse doesn’t just say throw or cast—it implies release. If we don’t let go, God’s hands are tied. He’s waiting for us to trust Him.

Many of us struggle with this part.  We give it to Jesus during an emotional time of prayer but as our day goes on we pick it right back up again.  But if we want the Lord to take our burdens, we must be willing to expel them from our own lives—thrusting them upon Jesus and resisting the urge to take them back.

A Personal Moment

After reading this verse, I was driving to the gym, thinking about a difficult meeting I had later that day. I had already prepared, but my mind started playing out every possible scenario. You know how we do that. So annoying.

Then I caught myself. Out loud, I said, “You have NO IDEA what will happen! Shut up!

And then I prayed, out loud for everyone listening in that car to hear (me and Jesus and the devil himself): “Lord, thank you that your hand is on this meeting. Holy Spirit, help me say what needs to be said and impart your love in every way. I trust you!”

Then I chose to stop thinking about it. Because I had thrown it on Jesus. I released it. I trusted Him. But I had to catch myself, stop myself, and actually THROW it back on Him.

Building a Habit of Trust

Not every situation is this simple, but what if we started doing this in the small things?

What if, when the big trials hit, we already had this habit built into our thinking—ready to trust Jesus completely by throwing our burdens onto Him?

Imagine how different life would be:

   •  Less stress, more peace.

   •  Healthier versions of us mentally, physically, spiritually

   •  More miracles, more testimonies flowing from our lives.

   •  A deeper relationship with God as we walk with Him through everything.

I challenge you—start today. Do it daily. Make it a habit. Let’s be women who find everything we need in Jesus.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
