Who here thinks life is hard? Raise your hand.  I see all your hands and feet being raised; thank you.

Who here wants to make sure your life is as difficult as possible? Raise your hand… No one.  Really?  No one at all?

Well, just in case someone is reading this who is too shy to participate, let me give you some advice on how to make sure your life is extremely difficult:

MARRY AN UNBELIEVER.

It’s true.  Marry someone who either 1, claims to be a Christian, however, their lives do not reflect being a disciple of Jesus, or 2, someone who is not a believer at all, and your life will be in danger.

I could simply play you a video of my life from about the age of 12 up until now, and that would be enough to convince you of this point, but we will stick to Scripture for now.

“Do not be unequally bound together with unbelievers [do not make mismatched alliances with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”  2 Corinthians 6:14 AMP

Why?? Why is this such a big deal?  I mean, aren’t we supposed to love people and win them to Jesus? Yeah of course.  That is not what this is talking about.

Here are some strong words from Matthew Henry’s Commentary for you:

So, according to him, a biblical marriage, one serving Jesus, would be impossible between a believer and an unbeliever.  In marriage, you need unity, ONE vision, and to be braided with the Holy Spirit, the 3 of you:  husband, wife, and the Holy Spirit.  You cannot do that with an unbeliever.

In the Old Testament, Moses gives the people of Israel a strict warning as they are about to enter the promised land:

“You shall make no covenant with [the people of the land] and show no favor to them. Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them… for they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods….” (Deut. 7:3-4)

Fast forward several hundred years, and we find Israel in direct rebellion against God’s command:

“The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites…; and they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.” (Judges 3:5-6)

I get it.  You really love this guy.  You can’t imagine life without him!  He is soooo dreamy, so kind and loving, his muscles O. M. G…. You are sure you will get him to church and serving the Lord.  Just SURE of it.

Don’t forget this, no matter how respectful, sweet, or “loving” an unbelieving partner is, they are at odds with Christ – they are in rebellion.

God is warning you.  If you think this way, you are thinking and feeling the same way as the Israelites, who ended up leaving the Lord and serving other gods. How many people in the church marry someone thinking they will win over this partner and then end up out of the church?  Countless couples.

RED FLAG.  HUGE RED FLAG.  If you miss this, you are not paying attention.

“Your body is the new Temple. As a follower of Christ, the Spirit of God dwells in you. This is why God calls us to “come out from among them, and separate.” He’s not telling us to be unloving – we are called to love unbelievers (1 Pet. 2:12).

There is a quote that sums it up best from Phylicia Masonheimer that says:

God is calling us to love Him more than we love our own desire for a relationship. He’s calling us to be a place of worship.

Phylicia Masonheimer, Blogger

Did you get that?? God is calling us to love Jesus MORE than our own desire for a relationship.  God cares for you; he cares about your relationships and your future spouse.  But NOT above YOUR life for HIM.

The One we need to honor with our lives is worthy of it all.  I challenge you to surrender your relationships and your need for a spouse and a companion, all to JESUS.

I challenge you to YIELD your life to His warning, protection, and direction.  NOTHING is worth risking your salvation or contaminating your future with a bond to a person in rebellion toward God.  That will contaminate your purity, marriage, future children, ministry, and every area of your life.

Single people…what a precious season you are in. Don’t throw it away; let God have it all.  My heart and prayers are with you!!

PS:  I want to continue further with this topic…In our “Singles Collection” of Blog posts, we will be addressing topics such as soul ties, consequences of being unequally yoked with an unbeliever, God’s grace for those who are unequally yoked, and how to know if someone is truly a disciple of Christ BEFORE it’s too late, how to get to know someone GOD’S way, and more!  Stay tuned for the first Wednesday of every month!
